What Happens in Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy usually begins with a joint session, sometimes followed by an individual conversation with each partner, then continues jointly. The therapist works on the pattern between partners rather than deciding who is right, and sessions often focus on how conflict starts, escalates and gets repaired.
The early sessions
Most therapists spend the first sessions understanding the relationship history, each partner's perspective and what each hopes will change. Goals are usually agreed jointly.
The ongoing work
Sessions commonly slow down a recurring interaction so both partners can see their own part in it, then practice a different response. Some approaches include structured exercises between sessions.
What it is not
It is not arbitration and it does not guarantee any particular outcome. Some couples strengthen the relationship; others reach clarity about a different path. A therapist cannot promise a result.
