Marriage Counseling: What to Expect

Marriage counseling typically addresses communication, recurring conflict, trust, intimacy, parenting, finances and decisions about the future. Sessions are usually weekly or every other week at the start, and progress often shows up first as faster de-escalation rather than fewer disagreements.

Common focuses

Long-running arguments that never resolve, distance that has accumulated over years, rebuilding after a breach of trust, and coordinating as parents or partners under stress.

Pacing

Early sessions gather history and establish goals. The middle of the work is usually the most demanding, since it involves changing familiar responses. Many couples review progress periodically with the therapist.
