How Teen Counseling Works

Teen counseling usually begins with a parent or guardian present for intake, then continues largely one-to-one with the adolescent. Therapists typically give teens a degree of confidentiality while keeping parents informed about general progress and any significant safety concern.

Confidentiality with minors

This is explained at the start, because teens engage more readily when they understand the boundaries. Policies vary by provider and by state law.

Parent involvement

Parents are commonly involved through periodic check-ins, occasional joint sessions and guidance on responses at home. The balance depends on the teen's age and the concern.
