Starting Therapy
How Often Should Therapy Sessions Be?
Weekly sessions are the most common starting point, particularly early on, because consistency helps establish momentum. Frequency often reduces to every other week or monthly as things stabilize. The right schedule depends on your circumstances and is agreed with your therapist.
What influences frequency
Severity and urgency of the concern, the approach being used, cost and insurance limits, availability, and how much between-session practice the work involves.
- How disruptive the concern currently is
- Whether the approach is structured or open-ended
- Cost, coverage and scheduling realities
- How the work is progressing
Changing the schedule
Frequency is not fixed. Many people step down gradually rather than stopping abruptly, and some return for occasional sessions later. Raising the question with your therapist is a normal part of the process.
